Cosmic Legends back in business (Cosmic Gate interview)

By Dominic Wren

After listening to the album a few times I can really say that this is straight up fire! After meeting up in Montreal last March, Cosmic Gate humbly kept their word for setting up an interview in the future. So without further of ado, here it is! The Cosmic Legends are back in business!

Before reading the interview, I recommend that you have a listen to album.

Enjoy!

You’ve been playing some of the songs on the album in sets around the world for a little while now, how does it feel to finally release them to the world?

“In all honesty, we were excited to finally release the album! We have been playing a few of the tracks for quite a while as you are saying, and we simply wanted to share the full album with our fans.

A release always is a bit of an anxious moment, very exciting, to get wider reactions from fans and colleagues, the question if will they share our taste, even after so many years it won’t leave us cold, but fortunately the reactions are pretty much awesome, just a great feel for our team and the two of us :)”

With reworked/edited tracks blended with brand new tracks, would you consider this album as a reminder of the past or a start of a new future?

“We tried to basically wrap an album together which stands for what we have been doing in the last two decades, so in musical terms, quite a long time period. We wanted to remix some of our classics, sure write new music, and on top remix tracks that were important for us on the way, tracks that influenced us, like Need To Feel Loved and Lizard. So basically the album is a reminder of where we come from, but in the sound we stand for in 2019, but also its hinting out new horizons, new sounds and structures we will use for new music, which is basically in the pipeline already and waiting for last finishing touches only.”

Your Grammy nomination must’ve sparked many different feelings but what was the first thought that went through your heads for this major accomplishment?

“If you do genre club music like we do, a Grammy certainly is not anything you would ever think about, at least we didn’t, so the whole nomination honestly took us by TOTAL surprise. Still now thinking about it we do not know how it happened to get nominated, nor we are thinking its ever going to happen again, we just enjoyed the fact and the positive irony of happening during our 20 year anniversary, which made it somehow even nicer and appreciated to say the least.”

During the process of creating this album, taking in factor the name suggesting time moving forward, were you guys looking to create new Cosmic Gate sounds or were you looking to continue mastering your traditional sound?

“A new album is always a mix of both. Its the natural signature sound we do, basically our style, independent if it was back in the Hardtrance days or now with the more progressive sound, a sound which on top of that, always very natural gets upgraded and pushed forward by us. Breaking boundaries, bring in new influences and ideas, this happens slowly from single to single, remix to remix, its not big changes at first, but when about two years have passed and a new album is done, we hear the small differences that step by step make quite a difference in the sound and style of a new album. And this is a good thing, in general we feel art has to develop and move forward, on top speaking for ourselves, we literally would be bored to do the same sound over and over again. in the end the album title was a bit of a statement from our side, about our way of handling things, our thinking about music, pretty much about the way we work.”

Out of the whole album, which song has the most impact on you guys and why?

“Every single song of the album is special to us, that’s why they are on this album. A lot of history, memories, stories are behind every track, so its kind of impossible for us to pick one and put it above others”

If you could describe the album in one word, what would it be?

“COSMICMOTHERFKNGATE :-D”

Emma Hewitt has two features on the album, she undoubtedly brings a sort of personalized voice to fit the Cosmic Gate sound, but could you guys explain why her voice is a sort of perfect fit for your tracks?

“To describe emotions and feeling is a pretty hard thing to do, but it seems indeed that Emma’s voice and our sound combined, seems to have a lot of magic for a lot of listeners. As said before sometimes things just fall into places, simply work well together, and so sure is our collaborations with Emma...

Now being 20 years into this incredible run, do you guys think your sound has progressed over the years?

“We pretty much touched this subject before basically, so you know we indeed feel our sound did progress a lot during the 20 years. To maybe turn things around a bit, imagine we would basically sound the same like 20 years ago, how poor, let alone from an artistic point, would this be? How could we even not musically develop in this fast pace changing world, as growing personalities that have the privilege to travel the globe and meet people from different cultures and backgrounds? But to be honest, we feel a lot of music in the trance world still sounds a lot like 20 years ago, and there is nothing wrong with that, music always turns in circles, but for us it would feel like we’ve been there and done that, where is our personal fun? We are far from making music unlike anyone else, but we love change and new influences, we like the challenge to push boundaries, the natural sound of cosmic gate, our signature handwriting no matter what will always be there...”

Shall we be expecting another project soon? ;)

“Absolutely :) as mentioned before, new music is already in the pipeline, FEBN was a current reflection of our past and present, we continue pushing our productions and sets towards new horizons in the future”.

There you have it ravers! These guys may have been around for 20 years but I feel like they are going to pull out 20 more outstanding years. Nic & Bossi are some of the realist personalities in the industry, which is absolutely beautiful to see and I hope that they stick around for 20 more years.

If you haven’t checked out the album yet I highly recommend you do! It’s really worthwhile even if you’re not big into the trance scene!

20 years of music (Here’s to 20 more, Cosmic Gate) - Montreal event review

By Dominic Wren

First off, let’s just all congratulate the legends known as Cosmic Gate for the mile stone 20 years of music. When you think about it, how many EDM artists have been on the world stage for the past 20 years and still relevant today? To celebrate, Cosmic Gate when on a 21 city, 5-month world tour. Last Friday, the duo stopped at Montreal’s New City Gas and pulled off a 3 hour set that not only stunned the crowd but the bouncers and workers of the event venue.

The brought the crowd on a cosmic exploration (yeah I just wrote that) of emotions like dropping their edit of Awaken and some hard trance mixed into Rocket Science by Above & Beyond. Unfortunately, their talented opener Orjan Nilsen couldn’t make it to his because due to flight cancellations. The headliners gave him a shout out while mixing his tracks like The Last Goodbye and Simulator into their set.

Once again, the Montreal crowd showed their passion for the art and danced all night with the legends. I will leave you to imagine the rest of their therapeutic show because it is truly unique experience that I find is very hard for other artists to beat.

If Cosmic Gate comes to a city near you, I truly recommend you grab your favorite rave buddy and rush over even if you’re not a fan of trance. These guys aren’t known for their amazing light shows or anything like that but they definitely are known for their insane track selection and true musical freedom.

7 sets I liked from Escapade Music Festival 2018 (Review)

By David Mann

2018 was another glorious year for the Escapade Music Festival. Set at the Lansdowne Park for a second year in a row, it really felt like the festival has found a new long-term home in Ottawa as the spacing in between the stages was perfectly balanced. The bass stage was set within the historic Aberdeen Pavilion and was well attended all weekend. The trance/underground stage was at TD Place, which provided a proper dark environment to dance away virtually anonymously. But the the biggest party was to be had on the mainstage, which the majority of the crowd congregated all weekend. The guys from DNA Presents organized yet another almost flawless event that continued on despite the testy weather conditions. Last year the rain shut down the mainstage for one day, but this year the music and fans braved on as the rain couldn't damper their high spirits. Below you'll find the 7 acts that really stood out from this year's Escapade:

Armin Van Buuren

Armin t the best set of the festival as he proved once again how he's the king of the festival mainstage. Through the years I've seen him use music from a variety of genres to pump up the crowd - but this time he relied on the music that he has promoted tirelessly through his popular ASOT radio show - trance.

He started off strong with dropping psy-trance, a genre that a few years ago would be an unlikely candidate to be played at a mainstage at any festival. But with Seven Lions, the sudden popularity of Vini Vinci and now Armin, psy-trance has become a mainstay.

Armin has been busy in the studio for the past year and it showed on the Escapade stage as he played all of his latest tracks which were all well received. Some notable tracks included "The Last Dancer" with Shapov, "You Are" with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano, and "Blah Blah". Armin asked the crowd if they wanted to be in a state of trance, when the crowd roared in the affirmative, the Dutch legend gave them exactly that and more. The last track played was "Take Me There" by Militia, which was last week's ASOT "tune of the week", a fitting end to a brilliant set.

Chus + Ceballos

The most dancing to be had at the festival was during the Chus + Ceballos set on day 2. The Spanish underground duo are no strangers to the scene as they have played in all of the best venues, including the much beloved Stereo nightclub in Montreal. They felt at home at the underground stage as they rocked TD Place with a consistent yet intense beat that gave you no choice but to move your feet in unison. Fixated on their monitors, Chus + Ceballos kept it to the basics, which was to craft and create the absolute best set they can do within the time given. And did they ever do that and more as the beat never dropped as a continuous rhythmic beat which reverberated within the stadium which allowed fans to dance for the entirety of their set. These guys know what they’re doing and it was an absolute pleasure to have watch the craft of DJ'ing at the highest level. Highlights included the Shaf Huse remix of "Stupidfly" by Daniel Dubb, "See La" by Prok & Fitch, "Grush" by Danny Serrano and Mendo, and "Easy Star" by DJ Fronter.

Purple Haze

When Sander Van Doorn announced his Purple Haze project a few years ago, which saw him return to trance and the underground, I was so happy. Having seen him on numerous live streams, including a few A State Of Trance appearances, my anticipation reached fever pitch by the time Escapade rolled around. His vibe was distinctly dark as he dropped driving trance with hints of techno.  He started off with the deeper "Voice of Silence" by Cristoph, and slowly built it up to trance with "Desire of Ages" by Joseph Areas, and the recent trance banger by Orjan Nilsen "Simulator". The set was rhythmic, had a driving energy, and most important of all - delighted the fans. Once of the last tracks included Standerwick's remix of "Coming Home" by Dash Berlin, which brought chills.

Cosmic gate

The trance didn't stop as the German legends Cosmic Gate owned the crowd as they played fresh tracks from Vol. 2 of their latest Materia album. A highlight was when they dropped their remix of a personal favourite track of mine, "Only road" by Gabriel and Dresden. Cosmic Gate got the crowd moving by giving them driving trance beats at a higher BPM mixed interspersed with their well known vocal melodic classics. The guys were animated behind the decks which is always fun to see. Cosmic Gate gave a lot of love to Anjunabeats as they played a multitude of tracks from the likes of Above and Beyond, with special mention to the excellent track by Ilan bluestone and Major Levi called "Will We Remain". When "Fall into you" played, the haunting vocals by Jes was goosebump worthy.

Rezz

Following Carnage and Ty Dolla $ign came the recent Juno award winner Rezz who wow'ed the crowd with her beautiful visuals and her unrelenting bass beats. Needing only her tracks to get the crowd where it needed to go, Rezz unleashed her powerful tracks including her latest "H E X". When she took a break from her discography, Madeon's evil edit of "Shelter" stood out.

Sydney Blu

The dreambox stage, tucked away behind the action, was rocking all day long with a great vibe and fans committed to dance. Sydney Blu killed it by dropping rhythmic house music for almost her entire set. She didn’t hold anything back as she never stopped moving behind the decks, being in lock step with the dancers at her side.

Slander

By far some of the biggest bass drops and crowd reactions were had when the Los Angeles duo Slander took the stage. Slander delivered a ton of bass including the "Knockout" by Krimer with a mix of hip hop like a trap remix of "God's Plan", and random throwbacks like "Yeah!" by usher. Slander punished the crowd with non-stop nastiness that brought the Abderdeen Pavilion to fever pitch. Did they eventually bring it down to give themselves the room to play their chill "Superhuman" track. Fun set that stood out from the rest.

Preview Cosmic Gate's Brilliant New Album "Materia: Chapter. One"

Is it possible we haven't yet heard peak Cosmic Gate? This duo are legends within the scene, and judging by their recent releases, including their latest album Materia: Chapter. One, it sounds like their studio work just keeps on getting better and better.

Materia is a beautiful album, filled with gorgeous vocal tracks, while always seeking to increase their range by adding a few darker tracks and progressive beats. Three stand out tracks exemplify this ideally as "Fall Into You" gives you that soaring evergreen vocal track, while their collaboration with Ferry Corsten "Dynamic" delivers a darker punch. Their first time track with Ilan Bluestone called "Spectrum" is a fantastic combination of progressive styles melded in with Cosmic Gate's energetic sound.

Everything about Materia sounds relevant and fresh, a very rewarding album to listen to. Cosmic Gate started off the new year with a strong statement thanks to Materia, and everyone should take notice.
