Grandtheft at New City Gas event review (May 5th, 2018)

Last Saturday was another spectacular night in Montreal as Grandtheft put on a huge show along with Kap Slap and Jeneaux at one of the biggest clubs in Canada, New City Gas.

The night started off with Jenaux and Kap Slap as they each performed a killer big room house set. Kap Slap took it away until midnight as he pulled some major throwbacks out of the hat like a Soulja Boy track and "I Can’t Stop" by Flux Pavillion to warm the crowd up. After mixing in from genre to genre, he managed to incorporate some mash-ups of tracks from Post Malone’s brand new album Beerbongs And Bentleys and some of his IDs.

Next to hit the decks was the Toronto born Aaron “Grandtheft” Waisglass. From 1:30 am to 3:00 am, he seemed to play with the crowd’s emotions by hitting them hard with some heavy trap like "Aaron’s Theme" then slowing it down with his release with vocalist Delaney Jane "Easy Go". He proceeded by creatively bringing the crowd and his set on a journey trough trap, deep house, trance, dubstep, old school and new school hip hop with live mash ups and remixes as well of his own tracks.

There was one moment during his time on stage where the crowd really went wild. Grandtheft slowly mixed in Drake's new hit single "God’s Plan". Of course that song would get any crowd going, but his mash-up of God’s Plan with Moski’s remix of "Say Less" really left the crowd in a wow state as it took us all by surprise.

Even though we lost a legendary artist in the last couple of weeks, Avicii was still with us on May 5th as Kap Slap mashed up more than one of the Swedish DJ’s tracks and Grandtheft made sure to including him in his set to show his respects. Lastly, the Toronto DJ closed down his set with one of his older tracks, "Number One", where he collaborated with Major Lazer in 2016.

All in all, it was a really fun night! The venue was unique, the artists were on fire, and the crowd was having a great time. Kap Slap really impressed me with the number of throwbacks in his set where we all felt like we were in our early teens for a brief moment. Grandtheft stuck to his authentic trap roots troughout most of his set that really kept us entertained. Looking forward to see what comes next from either artist!
