More events announced for the Mansion Nightclub

The Mansion Nightclub and the Bydek Group are trying to make a serious mark on the city with their new LOUD Friday series with Adam K kicking off the weekly event on August 31st. The next official announcement for the LOUD series is Joe Ghost who was just announced to play on September 7th by the Mansion twitter account.

Other rumoured acts coming up for Mansion is Chris Lake on October 5th and Tommy Trash on October 12th. These are big league names and I couldn't be happier to see Ottawa become a major destination for these DJ acts.

Nick Vachon found in Aruba

Nick Vachon was caught in Aruba and appeared in court in Ottawa today to be formally charged with theft over $5,000 and possession over $5,000. According to the Ottawa Sun the Aruban police picked up Nick Vachon on August 6th in "Oranjestad, on the western side of the tiny island that sits just north of Venezuela." He was brought back to Ottawa on Tuesday "with the assitance of the RCMP Air Services Unit."

I have two questions:

  • Is there any money left? I hope DNA Presents gets almost every penny back from the theft.
  • Why would the co-founder of DNA Presents and Bijou nightclub allegedly steal in the first place?

I'm glad this is finally over and that we can all go back to the music.

Update:

  • Nick Vachon flew on a private jet direct from Montreal to Aruba using the stolen funds.
  • A "significant" amount of money was recovered. No official number has been released yet.
  • Nick Vachon spent 6 days in an Aruban jail. Has been very cooperative with the authorities since.
  • DNA Presents had to lay off staff and slash operation costs since the theft.
  • Nick Vachon may have stolen more money from the Bijou Nightclub. Accountants are still reviewing the books.

I'll continue to update this page as I receive more information.

Rumour: Dada Life and Chris Lake coming to Ottawa this Fall?

Dada Life announced their massive North American tour yesterday and it currently shows a Sept 22nd event date for Ottawa:

It shows Ottawa as 'Ottawa, QC'. Could it be a typo or did they really mean a Montreal date and not Ottawa? We'll find out soon enough.

Update: Looks like they noticed their mistake and has now changed the QC to ON. Good news.

It looks like the LOUD event series at Mansion is gearing up for a big season as Chris Lake seems to be the next big announcement from the Bydek Group. The October 5th event is already posted on Want Tickets site. Chris Lake is no stranger to the Ottawa scene as he's already appeared in Ottawa twice in the past year and most recently played at the Veld Festival in Toronto and later at an after party at the Guv.

Things are finally picking up again for EDM events in Ottawa

After a few quiet weeks following the highly successful Skrillex appearance at Bluesfest things have finally picked up in Ottawa as all three major promotion companies in Ottawa (DNA Presents, Bydek Group, and The KNWLDG) have all announced events in the last few days. This is good news for all EDM fans as I'm sure you were wondering as well as I when the next batch of events will be rolled out.

Here's a rundown of the latest announcements:

Marcus Schossow will be coming back to Ottawa on Wednesday, August 29th at Barrymore's. This is DNA Presents first scheduled event after the Escapade theft so it's great to see them back on their feet again.

According to a recent Ottawa Citizen article, DNA Presents will be planning a big CE Center event around Christmas time. Who will they book? The last time DNA Presents staged a CE Centre event they booked Steve Angello/Nicky Romero so my guess is that they will stick with booking Prog house heavyweights like Ingrosso/Alesso, or maybe an Axwell/Dirty south combo.

Boys Noize will be in Montreal/Toronto in December and if all of the rumours are true then Skrillex and Boys Noize will be forming a super collab group called Dog Blood. Could maybe a Dillon Francis opener and Skrillex/Boys Noize collab fill up something like the CE Centre? I think so.

The Mansion Nightclub is starting to warm up to hosting EDM events in a big way after playing host to Madeon's first appearance in Ottawa (with the help of Bydek Group), and more recently the 'I Wub Dubstep' event last weekend that featured Bass Machines, Rainman, JC BOOM, and Dubspec.

The Bydek Group and Mansion Nightclub have made a strong commitment to EDM this season as they introduced their new Friday weekly event called LOUD. The first LOUD event will feature Toronto producer/DJ Adam K who is by now quite familiar with the Ottawa scene after playing in Barrymore's earlier this year and more recently during Bluesfest when he opened for Arty. Ottawa has turned into an important gig for Adam K so expect him to pull out all of the stops to ensure everyone in that club has a good time on August 31st. Ryan Labelle and DJ Charles will be the opening DJs.

Tickets are $10, click here for more info.

The KNWLDG have been hard at work at delivering new events since aiding to organize the impromptu Skrillex after party at Ritual Nightclub on July 14th. This Friday will feature a free Dubsmack event with Rainman, JC Boom, and Dubspec at Ritual. On Sept 13th they are bringing Dub FX (Australia), Flower Fairy (Australia), Snareophobe (UK), and Starfighterz (UK) to Saint Brigid's Centre for the Arts. The very next day on Sept 14th the monthly Dubsmack event will feature dubstep/DnB artist Dieselboy. Well done.

Finally, I'd like to give a special shout out to Lowpass and Zaphod's so I can congratulate both at making 'Electronic Monday's' a weekly event. You can grab Lowpass' latest August mix here and just in case you missed my first interview at EDM Ottawa featuring both Lowpass and Eugene Haslam you can read it by clicking here.

What I'm listening to right now

After spending the weekend listening to Gareth Emery's event in NYC, Leon Bolier/Marcus Schossow live sets on be-at.tv, I've decided to change it up this week with a little something different:

Felix Cartal - Tonight feat. Maja Ivarsson (Autoerotique Remix Preview) - How can I forget this one? What a massive remix by Autoerotique, huge track.

Jack Beats - Epidemic Feat. Dillon Francis

Dream - This Isn't House (I'm still not bored of this)

Dank (USA) - Blow Me (Been tracking this release for the past few days on Beatport, it's now hit #1 in the Dubstep charts - the second drop is especially sick)

Found this mix of 'chillstep' via Reddit - so far it's really good, perfect to listen to while you're getting stuff done:
