Nick Vachon is believed to be hiding in Montreal (Escapade Theft)

According to the Ottawa Sun article:

Vachon is believed to be hiding in Montreal and police there have assigned an investigator to the file.

Here's the official Ottawa Police Statement regarding the theft and Nick Vachon:

Paul Oakenfold At Bluesfest - A Night To Remember

For those that were there last Thursday knew how special that night was as the young, old, and everyone in between were in the crowd to see the legendary Paul Oakenfold perform.

A note to the openers: Mister Parker brought a lot of energy into his set with banger after banger while Cole surprised me with a solid electro set that got everyone moving.

Prior to Oakenfold's set at Bluesfest I had the opportunity to listen to two previous sets; one at Surrender Las Vegas via their podcast; the other at the Ministry of Sound Gallery via be-at.tv. At Surrender he played a more commercial set that was enjoyable but wasn't trance based at all; at the Ministry of Sound Paul delivered a powerful set that was heavy on the trance to the full appreciation of the crowd. What we got on Thursday was a mix of both as he almost evenly split his show between a progressive house/electro set and trance.

I thought that it was the trance side of the set that really turned a decent set into an epic one as everyone around me were just dancing and having a great time while the BPMs were raised. Paul Oakenfold shines in the trance genre and I really hope that he stays true to it as so many DJs try to chase fame by changing their sound. Oakenfold started off the trance side of things with one of my all time favourite trance tracks 'Big Sky' by John O'Callaghan which had the crowd singing along. From then on Paul unleashed some relentless and energetic trance while commanding a big stage presence as he frequently made a lot of eye contact and fan acknowledgement with the first few rows. Once 'RessuRection' was dropped it gave us all time to slow down and appreciate the special moment that was created at the Electro Stage which far far away from whatever LMFAO was doing elsewhere.

What really inspired me was the great attitude from the crowd including all of these older ravers present that added to the PLUR atmosphere. Thanks to Paul Oakenfold and everyone that showed up that made that night something special to remember.

A few surprising facts about Paul Oakenfold

I'm still reeling from that epic set by the legend Paul Oakenfold last night at Bluesfest. I will write a review sometime soon but meanwhile enjoy some of these surprising facts about Oakenfold from his wiki page:

  • He's 48. Okay that one is not that surprising but it's interesting nonetheless.
  • Paul once interviewed Bob Marley claiming to be an NME/Melody Maker journalist when he was 21 years old.
  • He used to work as an A&R man for Champion Records when he lived in West Harlem and managed to sign DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and Salt-n-Pepa.
  • He was a promoter and British agent for the Beastie Boys and Run-D.M.C.
  • His 'Perfecto Remix' of U2's "Even Better Than the Real Thing" charted higher than the original song. Oakenfold ended up opening for U2 in their Zooropa/Zoomerang tour in over 50 locations.
  • In 1995 he was the first DJ to play on the main stage at the Glastonbury Festival for 90,000 people.

This guy kinda blows my mind. Full respect.

Paul Oakenfold tonight!

The Electro Stage is going to be really fun with Mister Parker opening at 7:00 pm, Cole at 8:00 pm, and the legend Paul Oakenfold on at 9:30 pm.

I've been listening to Paul Oakenfold a lot through his Perfecto Podcast in which he's been playing a lot of trance music from his own label. I find his show to be really refreshing because he is always giving you new sounds to listen that you cannot get anywhere else. Looking forward to see him for the first time live!

Ottawa Sun reviews Tiesto

From the Ottawa Sun:

It was certainly a spectacle of sound and fury, dazzling strobe lights and rib-rattling bass. His re-imagining of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know was wonderfully warped in its excess.

But — and forgive my profound ignorance — I couldn’t help thinking the desired effect could be achieved a whole lot easier by just tossing on a Tiesto CD at full volume while bouncing around in headphones and twiddling knobs.

Oh well, judging by the hordes of beautiful people pumping their fists in glowing affection, he was pushing all the right buttons.

Please stick to reviewing a genre of music that you enjoy rather than debasing mine.

P.S. Check out image 24 out of 30, if you were around that area yesterday you knew exactly who that guy was.

First Impressions of Bluesfest

I wasn't sure what to expect at this year's Bluesfest with these new RFID bracelets and having major DJs headlining the event but after having experienced the first night all of my uncertainties were put aside as it couldn't have gone off any better.

RFID Bracelets

Not a problem at all. The bracelets are adjustable and you can easily take it off after the festivities. The first time I had seen RFID bracelets was at the Electric Zoo in NYC last year and have found them very convenient to use as you simply put your bracelet next to the shoulder height scanner, wait until it beeps, and in you go. No fuss. Getting into Bluesfest last night couldn't have been any easier.

FOOD

Great selection of food options ranging from Carribbean, Greek, Mexican and of course the amazing burgers from the Works. Last night I had their burger with BBQ sauce and caramelized onions ($9) and it was solid. Their BBQ sauce is a little sweet for my taste so I'm going with the one only with cheese for next time ($8). The Works $4.50 sweet potato fries with that special dip is a real winner though, highly recommended.

I also drank some $4 lemonade - kinda wished that it was a little less expensive but had enjoyed it nonetheless. I shouldn't forget the classic beavertails as I had the one with the cinnamon for $4 and that put into a total sugar frenzy which was perfect for the madness that occurred in the first few rows of the Tiesto set.

VIP

I didn't go for a VIP ticket this time around but I saw enough of the set up to put in my two cents. The VIP area closest to the main stage (I believe it's the Metropolitain Gold Circle Area) appears to offer a really good viewing area and you have plenty of room to dance. For those that enjoy EDM without having water splashed in your face every 5 minutes it's a good alternative to consider if you have the extra cash.

Tonight I'll be back to watch Paul Oakenfold at the Electro Stage - can't wait!

Escapade Scandal Update

Ottawa Citizen updated their original news story yesterday so if you are interested in the nitty gritty of the theft I suggest you go read it. But for EDM Ottawa and the intentions of this site this is what I what I found important:

“The success of the festival was great, but this is a really tough spot for the company,” said O”Farrell, adding he will meet with the company’s accountant and lawyer to figure out where the company stands financially.

I hope that DNA Presents jumps back from this mess so we can all get back to the music.

Apparently this isn't our first festival scandal: Carl Cox back in 1996

I tried my best to find the original link to this story that I found on reddit but all I can come up with was this link from the Trance Addict forum archives. If anyone has the original link please let me know. This event happened before I was going out to clubs so this is the first time I've heard about it.

EXCERPT from an interview with Carl:

-I remember reading about this rave you did in Canada, that went horrendously wrong!

Ottawa. These kids had put on this party for two days, supposed to be 10,000 people each day. The line up was incredible, lots of people from England. I said I ain't going if I don't have a work permit but the promoters said 'It's okay, your names will be sorted out.' We got to Canada and got through. But there was no pick up. We called the promoter, found him,and he said, 'We're busy can you get a taxi to your hotel.' So we said ok, we did that. We got to the hotel, they said 'your rooms have been sold, we've got nothing for you.' We tried to find the promoter and couldn't find him. So we went to the Westin, and I got my credit card out. So far - no work permit, had to get a taxi, got to the hotel and our rooms have been sold, now I have to pay my own money to stay in the Westin... I'm like, this is not looking good.

Carl Cox goes to the wall for his audience

I didn't see anyone from the promoters until I was picked up to go to the party at 1.30 in the morning. I'm fuming now. No one's telling me anything. But all I can think is that this is my first time in Canada and all these kids have come for me. This is the only time I've done this and I'm thinking I can't be in Canada and not go to the party. This guy comes for us in this old Datsun pick up, there's all chickens in the back, it's a wreck. We get to the party and see Lenny D, and he's like 'This party is , there's only about 10 people here and the sound system went down halfway through and the buses that brought people down from Montreal hadn't got paid so they stranded people.' So the only place we could go to was this one area on the football field where there was about 300 people. We haven't see any of the promoters, they've all skipped off. So my idea was to make really good out of a bad situation. I went on, and the people there had the best time 'cos we were all in the same boat. Halfway through, the sound system cut off, and the PA people said 'that's it, we're not playing any more unless we get paid.' So I had to get on the mike and say 'These sound people are not going to switch the sound back on unless they get paid,' so now I'm being an ambassador to the whole situation. So we passed round the hat and we all put money in - and I put money in! - and we managed to keep the party going.

Meanwhile, the sun comes up and I'm wearing this black t-shirt and I felt really itchy, and I pulled across my back of my neck and it was all black and it was mosquitos. All over me! I'd been working so hard I hadn't noticed! So I get back to the hotel room and I felt really bad and itchy and my whole neck and back was covered in mosquito bites. Then I found out that one of the promoters was on a suicide watch because he felt really bad and couldn't handle it, and eventually actually killed himself. The other promoter had his mum's house hocked for deposits for all sorts of things.

-The guy didn't kill himself that weekend?

No, but he did commit suicide.

-How much did it cost you?

It ran into the thousands.

I really hope that we can all get beyond this event and return back to normal. The EDM scene is strong in Ottawa and we'll get through this.

$600k went missing from Escapade Music Festival while co-founder disappears

From the Ottawa Citizen:

Police are expected to issue a warrant Wednesday for Nick Vachon, 26, one of the founding partners of DNA Presents, the company that staged the two-day festival. Vachon has not been seen or heard from since early Monday morning, when the proceeds from the festival’s ticket sales were discovered missing.

A safe at festival venue Ottawa Stadium was found empty early that morning by some of the other DNA partners. It is believed that more than $600,000 is missing.

...... What is there to say with news like this? This is a huge blow to DNA Presents and the entire EDM community as a whole.

“This just crushed us, we can’t believe it. We had such a great event and now this happened. I don’t even know how to cope with it right now,” said O'Farrell.

One of the first questions in my head is: Have all the DJs and everyone connected to this event been paid? I really hope so.

This is sad news. I'll keep you guys updated as I'm sure this is not the end of the story.
